Is there a factory in France where Santo dolls are made?
I'm going to France next summer and will wanted to see how dolls are made Santo.
There is not "a" factory special but many places where these little figures are made and they differ in location and style. It is very much a "hands on industry" and they are churned out by machines. There santons traditional cotta are made of earth or plaster and then painted by hand, some are more in modern designs, and not all are made with molds, some are hand-carved wood, and today some are made with materials different fashion. They also vary in size, from larger to smaller size doll patterns. Provencal town Aubagne Town has several artisans who make them, they are also made in Marseille, Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, Arles, Digne-les-Bains and other places in the south of France. One of the most famous santonniers (artisans who make santons) in Aix-en-Provence was Jean Baptiste Fouque, who founded Maison Fouque. He also started an annual exhibition in Aix for santonniers to display their wares. Depending on what is of particular interest to you, you have a large number of objects to choose, so I suggest you visit various websites to see which ones interest you more, and then decide which would like to visit. Also Although there are many not sold in stores, all current workshops may be open to visitors, so depending on where you go you must to ask local Syndicat d 'Initiative (tourist office) which are those that are.
