Glass mosaics come in a vast range of colours and textures. Cathedral, Opalescent and Full or Sheet Antique Glass are three main categories of stained glass. Different variety of mosaic glass costs different. It means that its prices range from reasonable to very expensive. Therefore, you might want to start with ordinary glasses until you're 100% sure about your slicing and dicing skills. There are many things need to be considered while going to make glass mosaics.
First thing is to go with a glass and have all your tools ready at hand. Later, you need a sketch or a pattern, not too fanciful, if this is your first time. Now, make two tracings of the pattern and number each part of the pattern. After you have to cut the pattern to make templates. A large number of people use glass pattern shears for the cutting as this leaves space for the foil and solder. Now, trace each pattern template along with its specific number on the glass with a glass marker. Make sure to cut carefully or score along the inner side of the tracing line.
When you score the glass, you need to break the pieces carefully with your hands or using glass pliers. Now, arrange them together on your work board. Here you have to make sure that the glass pieces don't shift around using push pins.
In the process of making glass mosaics, sometimes it is happened that the glass pieces may not fit perfectly and at that time you will have to grind the edges a bit to shape them. Now, compare the glass pieces with the pattern tracings and mark the edges that are outside the tracing lines. Later, mark these and grind outside the marker lines. You have to do this for every single piece until they all fit together perfectly. Foil each glass piece next along the edges. Smooth the foil tape with your fingers and then burnish with the lathekin. Assemble all the pieces together once more once you have foiled them.
After that, brush flux over the foil seams and hold the solder over the seams and melt it with the soldering iron. Examine that the melted solder covers the foil entirely. Solder all the seams this way. After completing your process, turn the soldered glass over and solder the other side as well. Now, clean the glass with a soft rag and glass cleaner and rub patina over the soldering with a rag to give an antique effect.
The above mentioned instructions will really help you in making Glass Mosaics. With practice and more research in the field, you can refine your skills and create some stunning mosaics.
